FOODIE FOOLS DAY RECIPE! - "Grilled Cheese Sandwiches"

I know it's a little late in the day, but maybe if you're reading this from the Western Time Zone you still have enough time to play a delightful little trick on a friend or family member. A friend shared a link with me (thank you Marty!) a few days ago that had some cute April Fools ideas on it.  Some of them were very time consuming and you could tell immediately that the payout was not worth the ante. But one in particular stood out to me that would make my daughter squeal with delight. Well, first confusion, then delight. Here's how you do it, it's very easy and requires very little time and effort.

~Ingredients~

1 prepared pound cake (You can use a store-bought cake but they seemed very small. So I baked my own.)
White cake frosting
yellow food coloring
red food coloring

~Directions~
1.  Prepare pound cake as you normally would and allow to cool for an hour or so.
2.  Scoop out desired amount of frosting into a bowl.
3.  Add drops of both yellow and red food coloring until you reach the color of American cheese.
4.  Cut two slices of your pound cake and toast them in the toaster oven until slightly browned on one side.
5.  Spread the colored frosting on the un-browned side of one of the slices of pound cake.  Place the other slice of pound cake on top, browned-side-up so it looks exactly like a grilled cheese sandwich.
It's unreal how cool they came out! Loved it!
After a moment or two of confusion, Piper's mind went totally haywire. Her brain said grilled cheese, her mouth said dessert. For a new little toddler brain, that had to be really trippy.
AND HERE'S A VIDEO!!!

Foodie Fun: Mandarin Candle

My complete lack of blogging lately is due to three very specific things:  1) I officially rejoined the work force while also teaching my Foodie Baby class which left literally no time to blog, 2) Getting my very feisty 19-month old daughter acclimated to daycare for the very first time while trying to ease into the evening routine of "pick-up-from-daycare-bathe-spend-quality-time-together-then-bed-time" which isn't as easy as some would have you think, and 3) Pinterest. Damn you Pinterest and all of your addictive glory. I was suckered into it about a month ago and now I just can't stop. I love all of the creative ideas people have brought together to share in one online community. Brilliant. Now people like me are even more suckered into the world wide web than we were before. Oh well! Just means more fun foodie times ahead! Woo hoo!

I should have taken step-by-step pics but there is a tutorial on YouTube.com that is so easy to follow that it can do all the explaining pretty well. I also just bought a huge bag of Clem 'n Tina's mandarins at the grocery store so I was limited to using a mandarin instead of an orange. I'm not sure if using the orange would have made a difference...maybe the "wick" would have been longer making the flame a little bigger and brighter. My candle was pretty dim but it still glowed like a really cool small orange orb. Neato. Click here to watch the tutorial video on how to make your own orange (or in my case, mandarin,) candle!  Below are the pictures I took of my earthy 'lil Tuesday night project.

Foodie Baby: PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD

I know that every parent at some point plays "airplane" or "choo choo train" with their baby's food in order for them to enjoy it, but when is the last time you truly played with your food?  When have you gotten down on the floor, and incorporated a vegetable as a method of play?  I find that the more often I simply expose Piper to fruits, veggies, and spices in a day-to-day manner, the more comfortable she seems to be with food in general. She is allowed to play in the spice cabinet so she can smell the spices through the bags, bottles, and jars (through this method I have found she prefers mint flakes and Herbs de Provence).  When the refrigerator door is opened, she is allowed to briefly open and close the crisper drawers (sometimes I find random objects in there which brings a smile to my face when she's napping or asleep), and when I'm cooking, she is ALWAYS allowed to gnaw and teethe on whatever fruit or vegetable I might be chopping.  If it comes from the fridge, the cool wet textures have to feel good on red, sore gums, and as they may nibble bits and pieces off of the food, a little nutrition is added to their diet!

Today while chopping vegetables for a crock pot beef barley soup, I took a few minutes to really have some fun with a carrot. Carrots can be A LOT of fun, especially if used as a poker/tickler somewhere around the rib cage area....  So explore the foods in your pantry and refrigerator, and have some FUN with your food!  Maria Montessori would be proud!
