Foodie Beauty: Hot Oils & Honey Treatment

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening. On my head, ends are splitting.  Yep, that's right. It's that time of year again for dry, dull, cold-weather damaged hair.  As many of you know, I'm a huge honey adherent. For me it's a cure all, internally and externally.  Not only does it have healing properties but it also retains moisture. PERFECT for readying your tresses for these colder months. I also have a bazillion oils on hand for cooking AND my skin. So why not see how they work on my hair?  It's so simple!

~Ingredients~

1Tbsp. honey
1Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
1 Tbsp. heated coconut oil (so that it is not solid anymore, 10-15 seconds)

~Directions~

1.  Stir the honey and oils together.
2.  Wet your hair, but not to the point that it's dripping. Just a little more than damp.
3.  Heat the oils in the microwave until it's very warm or hot, but you are still able to touch it and apply it to your hair somewhat comfortably (about 30 seconds).
4.  Massage the mixture into your hair, starting at the ends (that's where your hair needs it the most) and ending at the scalp until all of the mixture is used.
5.  Wet a towel with really hot water from the sink, wring it out thoroughly, and wrap around your head.
6.  Keep in the hot towel for a minimum of 30 minutes.
7.  Wash out of your hair with shampoo. Repeat a few times if you can still feel it in your hair.  There is no need to use conditioner.

So far, as my hair air dries, it feels incredibly light and super soft. Not a bit greasy, heavy, or oily. So awesome!

Foodie Beauty: Yogurt Honey Mask

I made zucchini fritters with homemade tzatziki sauce last night for dinner and now I have a lot of leftover plain flavored strained Greek yogurt. That means two things:  Delicious yogurt and fruit blends for The Pipster, and DIY skin treatments!

Why are both yogurt and honey so good for the skin?  First of all, yogurt stimulates collagen production making it perfect for plumping up unwanted facial lines and creases. Second, it is chalk full of lactic acid which refines the pores. It's natural, so you don't have to worry about the abrasiveness of store-bought astringents.  Honey is known to retain water. Therefore it can trap moisture inside the skin leaving your skin feeling balanced and hydrated. It also is widely known to treat minor cuts and abrasions.  So if you exfoliate your face too hard by accident (note how red my face is in the picture below...oops), the honey will help to repair it. Brilliant!  Here is how I made mine!

~Ingredients~

1 Tbsp Greek yogurt (do not use low or non-fat, the fats are healthy for your skin)
1 tsp. room temperature honey

The colors of nature are pretty!
~Directions~

1.  Stir the two ingredients together.

2.  Apply generously to the face and neck.
3.  Let sit for 15-20 minutes.
I scrubby scrubbed way too hard. Good thing there's honey in the mask to repair my oopsie!

4.  Rinse off with a nice, hot, steaming washcloth.
