Foodie Beauty: Hot Oils & Honey Treatment

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening. On my head, ends are splitting.  Yep, that's right. It's that time of year again for dry, dull, cold-weather damaged hair.  As many of you know, I'm a huge honey adherent. For me it's a cure all, internally and externally.  Not only does it have healing properties but it also retains moisture. PERFECT for readying your tresses for these colder months. I also have a bazillion oils on hand for cooking AND my skin. So why not see how they work on my hair?  It's so simple!

~Ingredients~

1Tbsp. honey
1Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
1 Tbsp. heated coconut oil (so that it is not solid anymore, 10-15 seconds)

~Directions~

1.  Stir the honey and oils together.
2.  Wet your hair, but not to the point that it's dripping. Just a little more than damp.
3.  Heat the oils in the microwave until it's very warm or hot, but you are still able to touch it and apply it to your hair somewhat comfortably (about 30 seconds).
4.  Massage the mixture into your hair, starting at the ends (that's where your hair needs it the most) and ending at the scalp until all of the mixture is used.
5.  Wet a towel with really hot water from the sink, wring it out thoroughly, and wrap around your head.
6.  Keep in the hot towel for a minimum of 30 minutes.
7.  Wash out of your hair with shampoo. Repeat a few times if you can still feel it in your hair.  There is no need to use conditioner.

So far, as my hair air dries, it feels incredibly light and super soft. Not a bit greasy, heavy, or oily. So awesome!

Foodie Baby: Hummus on Whole Wheat

Yesterday for lunch I decided to make Piper a very basic hummus to see if chickpeas were her thing.  The recipe is below, but I had to capture the priceless sequence of faces as she discovered this new and healthy food.

At first she was inquisitive:

What's For Dinner? - Margarita Grilled Shrimp

Right out of the gate, I will tell you my experience making this dish and you can do with it what you will.  For me, this was one of those foodie experiments that turned out to be a lot of fun to make (as the pictures indicate), and totally wasn't worth all of the work. At the end of the dish, I can say it truly was delicious, but I didn't taste a lick of the "margarita," just a lot of good grilled shrimp flavor. Hmmmm....

~Ingredients~

1 pound of raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 cloves of minced garlic
2 Tbsp. fresh squeezed lime juice
3 Tbsp. olive oil
2 tsp. tequila (and maybe a splash or two more)
3 Tbsp. fresh chopped cilantro
1/4 tsp. ground red pepper
1/4 tsp. salt
Desired amount of cooked rice

~Instructions~

Combine the garlic....

Shove some limes down your dress and party like a rock star....
Get serious and squeeze the lime juice into the same bowl as the garlic....
Pound some of the tequila because you can....
Now put the bottle down and combine that with all of the other ingredients in the bowl....
Toss the shrimp in it and let marinate.  I marinated it for an hour and a half.
Take a picture of your awesome coals you have burning on the Hibachi because you're a nerd....
Take a picture of you with your shrimp because the tequila has kicked in and now you think you're best friends....
Serve on a bed of rice, and voila!
